TMJ TREATMENTS

PERSONALIZED CARE FOR JAW DISCONFORT

Jaw discomfort can make eating, talking, and everyday activities frustrating. At Peacock Dental in Port St. Lucie, Florida, Dr. Mirela Giurgiu, DDS, provides personalized evaluations for patients experiencing jaw pain, muscle tenderness, and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders.

Our goal is to understand your concerns, explain your options clearly, and help you take the next step toward more comfortable jaw function.

What Are TMJ Disorders?

The temporomandibular joints, commonly called the TMJs, connect your lower jaw to your skull. Temporomandibular disorders—also known as TMD—affect these joints, the chewing muscles, or both.

Symptoms may include headaches, jaw pain, stiffness, painful clicking, difficulty opening your mouth, or jaw locking. Clicking without pain is common and does not necessarily require treatment.

A Personalized Jaw Evaluation

Your visit begins with a discussion of your symptoms and health history, followed by an examination of your jaw movement, joints, and surrounding muscles. Dr. Mirela also checks for dental problems that may contribute to discomfort.

Imaging or referral may be recommended when appropriate. Identifying the source of your symptoms helps guide your care.

Conservative Care for TMJ Symptoms

Treatment depends on your individual findings. Options discussed during your evaluation may include guidance on reducing jaw strain and clenching habits, appropriate home care, and referral for physical therapy or specialist assessment.

A custom nightguard may be considered when teeth grinding or clenching is present. Nightguards can protect teeth from grinding damage, but they are not a guaranteed solution for TMJ pain. Appliance selection and follow-up should reflect your individual needs.

Teeth Grinding and Clenching

Bruxism—the grinding or clenching of teeth—can cause tooth wear and muscle soreness. If you notice worn teeth, jaw tenderness, or frequent clenching, our team can evaluate your symptoms and discuss protective care.
